How to care for your soy candle

Firstly, what makes Soy wax different?

Soy wax is a sustainably sourced wax that is petroleum free. It is a great alternative to beeswax and paraffin wax, whilst also being vegan of course!

Soy wax burns up to 50% longer than paraffin wax because it has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, which means it melts at a cooler temperature and doesn't burn as fast.

To really maximise the burn time of your soy candle you have to care for it correctly. Here are the best tips to care for your candle.

1. The First Burn

This is the most important burn, especially with soy wax candles. This is because soy wax has a memory. I know it sounds strange but do you ever have candles tunnel? Which means there is wax around the sides of the candle container that don't melt whilst it's burning. This happens because you started on the wrong foot.

So to prevent tunnelling you need to burn the candle the first time at least until the melted wax pool reaches the very edge of the container, this can take a few hours but it's worth it! That way the next time you go to burn your candle, it will always have a melt pool to the edge of the container. Therefore no tunnelling and a longer lasting candle because you aren't wasting any wax!

2. Trimming the wick

It doesn't matter what type of wick your candle has, be it cotton, hemp or wooden you will need to trim the wick before every burn.

There are a few benefits of doing this;

  • It ensures an even burn every time you light your candle
  • Can prevent sputtering of the flame
  • Also stops the flame blowing around excessively which can cause it to one, hit the container and produce soot and two, can cause higher risk of fire.

You ideally want to trim the wick to about 3-4mm in length before every light, it can be easier to use a wick trimmer if you have one but not to worry if not scissors will work just as well.

Important: be sure to remove the trimmed pieces of wick from the candle before you light it.

3. Don't burn it for too long

I know it's tempting to burn your candle all day but this is not recommended.

Candles with fragrance added to them have a burning limit before the fragrance burns off from the wax. So the longer you burn you candle, the hotter it becomes and eventually it will go beyond that limit and the fragrance will begin to disappear.

The ideal amount of time to burn your candle each time is around four hours maximum. We would suggest three hours for each candle to make sure you can elongate that gorgeous scent for even longer!

Caring for your soy candle with the above tips will mean you get to enjoy your favourite scents for so much longer.

So I guess all that's left is for you to choose your next favourite scent to enjoy!
